Parish Church Of King Charles The Martyr

The Parish Church of King Charles The Martyr is a Church of England parish church in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. It is dedicated to Charles II who escaped to the town after being defeated at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651 and spent a number of months here before escaping to exile in France (via See Royal Tunbridge Wells). The original parish church was built in 1684 but this was replaced by what you see today between 1802 and 1832.

The architect was either John Shaw (who died in 1832) or his son John Shaw Jr (who took over the project after his father's death). The plasterwork ceiling was done by Sir John Soane's firm.
